What is the difference between a pre-engineered building (PEB) and a conventional steel structure?
A pre-engineered building is a factory-engineered steel system designed as a complete kit — columns, primary rafters, secondary purlins, wall and roof cladding — optimised for efficient manufacture and rapid on-site assembly. Conventional structural steel is designed and fabricated to project-specific requirements, using standard or custom sections, and is suited to structures with complex geometries, high loads, or specific architectural requirements. SMS designs and delivers both, and can advise on which approach is more appropriate for a given project.
Do you carry out the surface treatment and corrosion protection in-house?
Yes. Surface treatment — including sandblasting to the appropriate Sa standard and application of primer and protective coatings — is carried out as part of our in-house fabrication process before elements are transported to site. This controlled-environment approach produces more consistent coating quality than field-applied treatment, and gives clients confidence in the long-term corrosion resistance of the structure.
How quickly can prefabricated steel structures be erected compared to conventional construction?
Prefabricated steel construction typically delivers significant programme advantages over equivalent reinforced concrete or masonry construction. Because structural elements are fabricated off-site concurrently with site preparation, and because erection is a sequenced assembly process rather than a cast-and-cure cycle, large steel structures can be erected in days or weeks rather than months.
